Rights and dignity
Programmes respect human rights, local identity and the dignity of every participant.
Community-led development for resilient rural Malawi.
Our work
SURCOD brings livelihoods, climate resilience, youth opportunity, health, equality and inclusion together because lasting rural development depends on these priorities moving forward as one.

Community priorities guide programme design

Youth learning and participation

Health knowledge shared locally
An integrated programme model
A household's food security can be affected by water, climate, health, income, gender equality, education and access to information. SURCOD therefore connects programme areas rather than treating community priorities as isolated issues.
Each programme contributes to wider livelihood, resilience and inclusion outcomes.
Chikwawa and Nsanje remain the primary geographic focus of community programmes.
People contribute from identifying needs through planning, implementation, evaluation and sustainability.
Programme areas
Each area has a distinct focus while contributing to SURCOD's wider mission of locally owned and inclusive rural development.
01SURCOD works with farmer groups and rural households to strengthen food production, practical agricultural knowledge, cooperation, income opportunities and household resilience.
02Communities build practical capacity to conserve water and soil, restore ecosystems, manage natural resources and adapt livelihoods to changing environmental conditions.
03Young people access participatory learning, leadership development, intercultural exchange and practical skills that strengthen confidence, creativity and community action.
04Programmes promote community health, gender equality, rights awareness and meaningful participation for women, girls and people who are often excluded from development opportunities.
How programmes are developed
SURCOD's role is to facilitate, connect and strengthen local capacity. Communities remain active participants throughout the development process.
Community members and local structures identify priorities, barriers, existing strengths and opportunities.
Programme ideas, responsibilities and practical solutions are developed with the people involved.
Communities, SURCOD, volunteers and partners contribute skills and resources to agreed activities.
Progress, feedback, risks and results are reviewed so that programmes can adapt and improve.
Local knowledge, structures and responsibility are strengthened so benefits can continue beyond a project cycle.
Across every programme
Programmes respect human rights, local identity and the dignity of every participant.
Women and men participate as equal partners, with attention to barriers affecting women and girls.
Activities consider environmental sustainability and resilience for present and future generations.
Safe participation, responsible conduct, accessible feedback and transparent delivery are required throughout.
Where we work
SURCOD works primarily in Chikwawa and Nsanje, collaborating with community-based organisations, farmer groups, youth clubs, traditional leaders, volunteers and district structures.
